The collection I'm working on now is menswear and will incorporate a lot more drawing than my usual fashion drawings. The research and my notes are above in my sketchbook. Be excited! A Portrait for Winter Break

winter break starts today! went thrifting after class (well after food and coffee) and found a metallic bronze leather skirt...still figuring out what colors would go well with it. it's a bit dark and i'm looking all over for inspiration. any ideas? for the past 2 weeks i've been locked in the sewing room for my finals including this self-portrait for illustration. i'm mildly surprised i could pull it together because at around 6am i started to doubt myself and the project but i had no other option but to finish. in the end it really was a portrait of how i work--a need for surface decoration, breaking apart patterns and colors, heavy application.

jillian tamaki and diem chau. these are incredibly precise and sensitive but powerful. just amazing.

i made a new sketchbook with better paper and it's much easier to work drawings on a smaller scale. i am working more like this karlie kloss drawing so that i can start (and finish) more pieces. it's casual so i feel comfortable using any color or technique that i want at the moment. this was done with pencil, sharpie, and india ink marker

my favorite campaign from 2011 for valentino s/s. this specific picture resembles coco rocha a lot but after a swift google search they actually look nothing alike; just two girls with elegant profiles.

this was actually sketched 2 semesters ago but i didn't bother to scan it and re-work it until now. last week I made an incredibly huge n00b mistake that i feel too embarrassed to get into...lost a lot of original finals and one of my favorite projects for my portfolio that i just finished recently. (it was really naive of me to not own an external hard drive by now). on the flip side, i am now signed up for an illustration course! i had to drop my minor but this just feels right.

halfway through spring semester and intro to fashion sketching. at least i am finally using my old prismacolor markers and colored pencils that i've had since middle school! when i was younger, i would see my favorite comic illustrators using copics...i thought they were markers for gods. right now, i have one copic marker. it's pink. it was $8. LOL

reading through "masters of fashion illustration" and wow-wow-wow-wow-wow vintage fashion illustrations are incredible. i've been working in a very minimal color block method...and i love it...but i want to bring back the romantic exaggerated lines into a new series. i concentrated on bold and important lines taken from the "masters." there was so much drama and flair and attitude. i think that is what is missing in my (and many others') illustrations--its all a little too much information. the realistic style is very en vogue right now but i want to bring that party bus back and draw with F-L-A-I-R. below is a simple introductory sketch. i was born in 1991 so "vintage" beauty kind of escapes me...but i'm reading and seeing and opening my mind to it.

I am thinking about my 12-year old self sitting in my room alone drawing. When I think about those days, I can't believe how much I devoted my body to art...I clung onto it. It's kind of hard "finding yourself" when your parents want perfect grades and deny you a social life (or maybe it's the perfect combination?). I did get perfect grades, but that only came with intense studying and struggling to think in a way that maybe didn't come naturally. My dad used to throw away my drawings, but it was only when I won an art competition did he give me permission to continue--even pushing me into art lessons. So I happily drew still lives of flowers and landscapes for a couple years.

Then my second year in high school I finally took an art class with kids my age and in an environment that was open to "contemporary art." I saw artists question, think, cry, struggle, and enjoy making absolute pieces of junk. It was the most enlightening moment of my life and I actually appreciate that it came so late. Then I went to study for a year at MICA where again, I was shocked into a new way of life...one that really creates future "artists" (vagabonds/criminals/geniuses) But that time of freedom had to end...I decided I couldn't be the artist, but had to be the "designer". So I transferred and here I am, constantly making efforts at making "art" here and there but never fully letting myself go because time/effort = money. I am jealous and in awe of performance artists that make art for the sake of it (you cannot sell a perf. art, right?)

...and wish more fashion designers had the balls to make crazy s*** that probably won't sell at all. But it will inspire and move the world a little bit more than usual. I don't know if I can still call myself an artist anymore, but I'll make myself feel better, keep the title, and see what kind of works I will produce until I graduate. Long story short, I'm going to draw more naked people and other things that make me happy.

I just read Richard Vine's New China New Art. Perfect coffee table book, hehe. There are a lot of hi-quality images of Zhang Huan (one my favorites) and a great place to start to understand the new Chinese art movement. When artists are creatively stifled, they make and do things that are absolutely magnificent. "In large part, such wonder was due to our own myopia. Since the early 1980s, a number of Chinese artists had managed to study or exhibit abroad....presented post-Mao work that suggested the rise of an avant-garde in the People's Republic."

I'm so grateful that I can study in a creative field. I never even bothered applying to any other kind of school! If you love art, go into your field with every ounce of passion you have inside of yourself, or else you will never satisfy your subconscious (the worst critic)

it's winter break! i've been sleeping! here is my final for intro to fashion, a F/W collection inspired by a couture designer from the past. my designer of inspiration was mariano fortuny. i also looked at Bogdan Chesaru's photographic series of light refractions from soap bubbles.

i got a 100(A) for this project. amazed. so relieved. i was hesitant about being a fashion major but maybe I'm going in the right direction after all~

J.Crew Fall Lookbook 2010 x Rag & Bone Resort 2011

In response to J.Crew's incredible fall lookbook. I fell in love with this particular coat: warm, cropped, tailored, ribbed trim AND plaid?? The styling is impeccable. And I actually bought a pink lipstick that is similar to the bright pink they used in the shoot. It's an incredible idea--wearing bright colored lipstick with grey, brown, drab winter colors.

Also featured are Rag & Bone's combat wedge boots from Resort 2011. The entire collection is exactly how I want to dress everyday: tomboy accents, warm colors, moments of sharp tailoring. This particular boot was worn in a good 80% of the outfits ...dress, pant, tights. Its versatility is the most striking. The wedge platform makes it comfortable and it looks super clean. This brand is definitely my current favorite.

Also, it feels like everyday I find something totally new and fun to pursue. There's still a huge range of professions I want to approach--illustrator, stylist, creative director, music video director, hand model (it could happen...)...I just want to create things in the end. Products that I can say "I made these." I could work here in Atlanta, New York, South Korea...so many choices! I would prefer to stay in Atlanta but nothing in life is definite. 3 years of college left starting now.

Neutral Grey Walls behind Cato van Ee

Sketchbooks in the Summer, I can draw whatever I want! And however I want too. I filled a pouch with random markers/nibs/colors and ran out the door. I spent the entire day with KK at B&N and Starbucks. Those are great places to draw (only the ones with free wi-fi!!!) and I can ignore everything around me and just doodle little drawings. This one is india ink, copic marker, and colored pencil. (Extra points if you noticed the texture in the background).

The neutral grey paper behind her is inspiring me to paint my walls this color. It makes every other color super beautiful. Just got a new apartment in the city (ATL) and my brain is in interior design mode. I also bought a used Canon Rebel XTi as well. Life is moving fast! I'll be shooting and decorating for the next month :P

This one was a little messy because I dripped and smeared. I'm messy/sloppy and I don't mind having messy/sloppy art..............I used Crayola markers, Prismacolors (I have a total of 3 now!), sharpie, india ink. That orange color on the belt looks more like dirt-rust in person...and it came out of a regular"orange" Crayola! Its weird, the colors inside my Crayolas changed because they were years old stored in the back of a dark closet.

Also, this weekend I read (what is now)...my favorite book. "Style Deficit Disorder" by Tiffany Godoy. I cried at least five times...and nothing in the book is actually sad or depressing. It lays out the foundation of what is Harajuku today--the culture, the music, the artists. It was incredible... "dressing for yourself, not for men" (and etc...) and that is exactly what I need to hear when I am feeling very uninspired by moving back to Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta doesn't seem like the city for artists + community...but Harajuku happened because artists, with feelings just like mine, decided to do something in response to it (and because the rent was cheap...).

...and Annalise (my roommate) and I are listening to Dan Savage Lovecast...after watching Star Trek...and eating cheesy nachos. Yessss!

I added the Balenciaga Motorcycle Bag and the Q Riz Hobo by Marc Jacobs. These 2 purses comes in beautiful shapes and colors. If you cannot tell, I spent a lot of time detailing the Balenciaga because it's just plain awesome. Apparently Balenciaga fans are true and hardcore believers that this is the best purse ever made. I'm not too big of a fan for the Fendi Spy Bag though :( And just because this is my recent favorite:

Does anyone know what miumiu bag this is? I cannot find it! Lately I try to buy only natural fibers but now I think there's a greater importance of where that material came from and how it was treated. Even cotton destroys the land and the people working on it. I love leather and the quality and the art of it, but damn! I may start to buy man-made fibers again once I research more into how/why its produced...other than the usual cutting costs. There needs to be a change in production, but also a change in the way the modern consumer shops. Everything can't be "cheap" and "fast" anymore. And by paying more, you'll respect your clothing...and who made them as well :)

Chanel Spring 2010 Couture

Here is my Animation/Illustration (anistration?) of a mock Chanel campaign. It's not exactly what I had in mind...but with my current knowledge of animation, it's at a point where I am satisfied at how it looks right now. My idea was to have a Spring Couture ad made entirely out of "moving" textures. It was much more complex that I thought to isolate any one area. But I want to continue working in this style, so this process will get better? In my Electronic Media & Culture class we have to ask ourselves questions about our position as consumers vs electronic culture = my mock ad of the future = my Victoria's Secret documentary with my roommate = it was fun.

The dress of inspiration! When you look at Chanel pieces (versus any other runway) you really have to pay attention to what you're really seeing! It took me a lot of time (and squinting) to choose any one dress.

I bought a new sketchbook and I named it Jolie! It's a bright red Moleskine and whenever I own anything bright red, I name it Jolie. Every line is thin and calculated...graceful. I'm trying something new here.

"I recognize your shoes before I recognize your face." Lately, I've been taken over by a really really intense shoe obsession. I was mulling over the idea of being a shoe designer actually. Put that on my to-do list! It's more sculptural and I have been enjoying the 3D assignments (when they don't exceed my height).

WHAT I WANT LATE FALL 2009/SPRING 2010

1. Spectator shoes - They should replace most flats since they have a very similar silhouette, but just look more put together and chic. Flats these days are the "go-to" shoe but are looking a little "didn't try at all." I wear my leather GAP flats on rainy days, and therefore I hate them.

2. TOMS (canvas or silver glitter) - TOMS shoes are just effortless, care-free, and chill as hell.

3. Cognac Ankle Boots with NO embellishments, and a thick stacked heel.

I usually have various degrees of line thickness, but this time around I grabbed a micron and just enjoyed the simplicity of a line. There are so many beautiful things in Winter '09 and I want to draw them! This piece is about my current obsession with huge lofty sweaters. Winter in Georgia means its sweater season (my favorite-o)!

I read a new book, Mondofragile: Modern Fashion Illustrators from Japan. My favorite was Tadahiro Uesugi. It's hard to find hi-quality images of his work and I was super excited to scan them in and finally have them! He has a super sophisticated (and haphazard-looking) way of making recognizable shapes and blocks without using a black outline. In the top picture, I love that moment where the yellow hits the purple shade under the umbrella....ughhh. UGHHHH!!!! I really miss the Summer right now...

I moved my blog back to blogspot, it's the place to be! This is a self-portrait of my "transgendered self" and I from Drawing 2 (with Rubino), surprisingly my favorite class. I'm starting to appreciate the intense relationship I have with my materials (the pens, the paper surface, the space between) through illustration and drawing.
